Not only is Asher getting a new chance, he's also helping give others a new "leash" on life.

Asher has made a lot of progress over three months. Just barely a year old, it's hard to believe the sweet pup was found left for dead on railroad tracks in Jessamine County with two gunshot wounds.

Loyalty and Heroism Combined!

Loyal dog saves life of 87-year-old owner trapped in woods for two freezing nights.

By: N Gilbert

An 87-year-old man has his loyal dog to thank for being rescued, after spending two nights in a dense forest in near freezing temperatures.

Ray Grumbach is a tough, former logger who knows the outdoors well. Every Saturday, Ray goes walking in the woods near his home with his dog Chief. But while out for his walk this week, he fell and was unable to get back up. Chief stuck by his side and kept him warm for the next two nights as temperatures dipped below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celcius) and Ray fought to stay alive.

Search and Rescue sent out a helicopter, ATVs, horses and dozens of rescuers near Horne Lake on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada to find the elderly man. Ray's grandson ended up finding him. The grandson joined searchers and Chief recognized Ray's grandson's voice as he called out for his grandfather. The heroic dog ran to the grandson’s side and lead him and group of friends on a very obscure trail directly to Ray's side.

Ray was carried out on stretcher and Chief never let Ray out of her sight. Ray is being treated for hypothermia and exposure at Nanaimo hospital and will be released shortly, no doubt to the delight of Chief.

Dog Fighters GONE AWAY!

Suspected Dog Fighting Ring Closed Down!

By: N Gilbert

ANIMAL RESCUE CORPS REMOVES 65 DOGS FROM SUSPECTED FIGHTING OPERATION IN CHEATHAM COUNTY, TN
Ashland City, TN – International non-profit animal protection organization Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) removed 65 dogs from the property of a suspected dog fighting operation today in Ashland City, about 35 minutes west of Nashville, in a rescue mission called Operation Broken Chain.
On Thanksgiving night the Ashland City Fire Department and the Pleasant View Fire Department responded to a brush fire at an Ashland City residence. Their discovery of a large number of dogs chained around the property prompted them to call Cheatham County Animal Control (CCAC) who identified the situation as a suspected dog fighting/breeding operation. CCAC found 65 dogs, mostly American Pit Bull Terriers and some Beagles, all requiring medical attention, none with access to food or fresh water.
“We believe this is the largest dog fighting rescue in Tennessee history,” said ARC President Scotlund Haisley. “The conditions Animal Rescue Corps found on this property are the worst I have ever seen at a dog fighting operation in my 22-year career in animal protection.”
CCAC identified dogfighting paraphernalia such as a treadmill, fighting pen, and a spring pole used for strengthening dogs’ jaws. The dogs are underweight, have sores covering their bodies, and are exhibiting signs of internal parasites, but are all very eager for affection despite their desperate living conditions and medical needs.
“I quickly realized that Cheatham County Animal Control needed support in immediately addressing this situation,” said CCAC Director TJ Jordi. “The Animal Rescue Corps team was on the ground in less than 24 hours to support this rescue operation.”

All the animals on the property were surrendered to CCAC and relocated to an emergency shelter outside of Nashville. Their daily care and medical needs will be met by ARC until they can be assessed for placement and transported to partners around the country.
Animal Rescue Corps performed this rescue in conjunction with: Cheatham County Animal Control; New Leash on Life, a shelter in Lebanon, TN; Agape Animal Rescue out of Nashville; the Nashville Zoo and the Tennessee State Highway Patrol.

Pittie Rescues!

A True Nanny Dog to the Rescue!

 By: N Gilbert

One Indianapolis family had a lot to be thankful for yesterday after their blue pit bull took on the role of hero during a terrifying home invasion.
WISHTV sat down with married couple Nayeli Garzon-Jimenez and Adolfo Angeles-Morales, who explained how their family pet was able to successfully block armed robbers from escaping their home with their 3-month-old daughter.
Two armed robbers -- a man and a woman -- broke into the couple's home demanding money. Angeles-Morales was at work at the time but on the phone with his wife during the start of the invasion. He recounted the details for WISHTV, as his wife does not speak English.
"The guy say, 'Give me the money or we take the baby,'" Angeles-Morales explained.
When Garzon told them she didn't have any money, the woman began to seize the baby and a brief scuffle broke out before the male robber clocked Garzon on the forehead with his pistol, forcing her to release her child. The woman then attempted to escape through the back door with the baby before being accosted by the family's pit bull.
"She try to run away through the back door, but one of the doggies - he didn't let her go through the back door," said Angeles-Morales.
The woman then ran back toward the front door, releasing the baby to Garzon on the way. Both robbers left empty-handed and Garzon and her child were treated at Wishard Hospital. The baby was unharmed, while Garzon suffered a cut on her forehead and some bruising.
Despite the story's happy ending, some readers of the report on WISHTV took issue with the article due to the fact that the family's pit bull was only referred to as a "dog."
"Seriously, is it so hard to give credit to the fact that the dog is a PIT BULL?" wrote Amber Yorlano. "He's a heroic dog that is credit to the breed."
"Why didn't they specify that it was a pit bull?" added Ja Santana. "Had it been a negative story that would have been the first thing they mentioned."
Follow-ups on the story from msnNOW.com and Opposing Views both referred to the dog as a pit bull.
Indianapolis police are currently looking for a suspect described as an African-American male, 6-foot-2, 35 years old, heavyset with acne scars, a close-cut beard and light skin. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.
The female suspect has been described as being an African-American in her mid-20s, 5-foot-10, heavyset with braided ponytail and piercings on her lip and eyebrow.
Those with any information should call IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

Mills No More: How Los Angeles changed the sale of pets.

By: N Gilbert

Hats off to the Los Angeles City Council! Look what they did...

Los Angeles City has approved an ordinance that will effectively ban the retail sale of commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits. On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted 13-2 in favor of ending the flow of animals from puppy mills. Instead, pets found in LA pet stores will have to be from city shelters or rescue groups. ...The decision makes Los Angeles the largest city in the U.S. to ban pet sales.

"More than 70,000 animals are euthanized in Los Angeles city and county shelters every year - at taxpayer expense," said Elizabeth Oreck, Best Friends Animal Society's national manager of puppy mill initiatives. "To continue importing puppies and kittens from mills in other states while we are killing the surplus that are already filling our shelters simply doesn’t make sense. Today, Los Angeles took a reasonable and progressive step to addressing these issues in our city."

Good job L.A., it's about time our state does something right and not just for the greed and wealth of people's pocketbooks!

Crossposting: it DOES save lives!

Do you log onto your Facebook account and notice posts from pages that you've liked of a dog or cat in need at a shelter? Do you sometimes feel that it "floods" your Facebook feed that it makes you want to unlike the page? If so, you have just risked a life of a dog or cat in need!

Many people think that it is a myth or a rumor, but I have seen it myself personally where a dog or cat gets saved due to being shared all over Facebook and Twitter!
Take Homer here for instance...

Homer was at a local shelter in Los Angeles, California in absolutely TERRIBLE conditions. He was very thin, was loaded with mats in his fur, and just wasn't receiving the love and attention he deserved. I personally called the West LA shelter inquiring about Homer. I got in touch with the founder of Leave No Paws Behind, Inc. who told me that they would in fact be pulling Homer to safety the next morning.
Sure enough, LNPB pulled Homer to safety and he is currently getting all the love and care he needs and deserves! And you know what? It all happened due to the fact that Facebook users were consistently crossposting and sharing Homer's picture and shelter info on their walls. This is why crossposting is so important. Check out what love can do and did for Homer below!

Help the Homeless

Progress for Princess

By: N Gilbert

UPDATE:
April 29, 2013

Hello everyone! Apologies it took so long to update you on Princess. She is doing FABULOUSLY! Her repaired knee has healed up nicely, she is now in a different foster home where she gets to lounge on the couch indoors, take walks around the neighborhood and play with her two foster siblings. For now it looks as though the one surgery and limited strenuous exercise has eliminated her lameness. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and love! ♥

A homeless man's dog need surgery. Can you be the one to give them the holiday miracle they're seeking? Every little bit counts, from $1.00 to $100.00.
